Report back from Trinational Conference on NAFTA

From a Communication from Global Exchange - 3.28.08

"It's time for Mexico, Canada, and the United States to work together to change this flawed trade model."
- U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur (D-OH)

Dear Mexico readers,

We bring you exciting news about the outcomes of our trinational conference on NAFTA renegotiation and the last leg of our "Better Neighbors" speaking tour, which is starting in San Francisco next week and continuing up the West Coast. Click here to see if these U.S., Canadian, and Mexican experts are coming to your town.

On March 5th and 6th in Washington DC, legislators and civic organizations from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico all convened to discuss alternative visions to the current NAFTA model. New strategies on moving forward with these alternatives include:

  • A trinational legislative task force on NAFTA renegotiation was formed and has organized a meeting in Mexico to discuss a plan of action.

  • In New Orleans this April 21st and 22nd a trinational working group is teaming up with grassroots groups in New Orleans to organize a teach-in protesting the 4th Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) summit where Presidents Bush and Calderon will meet behind closed doors with Canadian Prime Minister Harper and their top corporate allies from all three countries.

  • Groups from all three countries are joining forces to advocate for a change to NAFTA's agricultural chapter.
  • We look forward to bringing you further updates on our work to create more human and fair trade policies.

    Best,

PARLIAMENTARIANS FROM THE THREE NAFTA COUNTRIES ANNOUNCE TASK FORCE ON NAFTA RENEGOTIATION

"It is indispensable that legislators from all three North American partner countries work together to design an alternative project that takes into account each nation's sovereignty, environmental protection, economic competitiveness, migration, and labor rights. We must work hand in hand with civic organizations to launch a progressive program that considers the well-being of human beings as the raison d'etre of public policy. The Mexican Senate is looking forward to hosting this Trinational Task Force in the near future."
